When work began on the Neon Automatic the plan was to use the Seiko NH35A movement again. It worked well in the H1 and it's reliable. It's not perfect though - it ships unregulated, it's low frequency so you don't get a super smooth sweep of the seconds hand, and it's pretty ugly (and the Neon Automatic has a display case back, so this does matter).
Even early this week the NH35A was still the plan, however I've been gathering feedback on the new designs from a number of trusted friends, reviewers and customers, and the general consensus has been that the small extra cost to upgrade the movement could elevate this watch to something really special.
Therefore I'm delighted to announce that the Neon Automatic will feature the Swiss made STP 1-11 movement, which is basically an ETA 2824-2 clone. When compared to the NH35A it wins in all areas. It ships from the factory better regulated, it's far prettier, it has an extra 2 hours of reserve power, it's slightly thinner so we can make the watch thinner, it has a better advertised accuracy and it beats at 28,800 vph so we'll get a super smooth sweep of the seconds hand. I'm super excited about it, I think it's going to result in a really amazing watch.
I know there will be a worry about the extra cost as a result of the upgrade. The STP 1-11 is indeed more expensive than the NH35A, however not crazily so and I'm still very much building an affordable brand. I set out to make watches that normal people like me could afford and that hasn't changed. So I won't take any extra profit at all from the movement upgrade, I'll just pass the extra expense at cost. Therefore it won't make any more than around $50 of difference to the price of a Neon Automatic, and you're going to get something much better.
And if that isn't enough good news, we're also using Swiss made grade a Super-Luminova on the Neon, so it's going to glow like a fuc*er.
I hope and think that this is an important next step in a really exciting journey to make Hamtun Watches a long term player in the affordable watch market. I hope you'll be along for the ride!
