Draken Benguela reviews, specs and photos - all you need to know
The Draken Benguela is the fourth watch from New Zealand brand Draken.
Starting with their dive collection, the Tugela (and later the Tugela 2) and followed by the Peregrine and the Kalahari, Draken have built a deserved reputation for making competitively priced tool-style watches with unique design components.
With the Tugela, Peregrine and the Kalahari, these design flourishes came in the form of playful power reserve metres. All were funded successfully via crowdfunding platforms and have a dedicated following.
Now, with the Benguela, Draken have taken things a step further. While still a dive watch, it moves further away from the tried and tested Rolex Submariner feel that’s so popular in the watch world, and becomes more unique as a result.
In particular the hooded lugs and “finger” indices give a striking and bold look. It’s a watch that’s not afraid to be itself.
So what is it? The Benguela is a 316L stainless steel dive watch with a cool bead blasted finish and an impressive 500m water resistance as a result of the included helium release valve.
Powering the Benguela is the tried and tested NH35a movement, the most popular automatic movement by far in watches around this price point. With incredible reliability, shock resistance and built-in anti-magnetic protection, it’s one of the best movements outside the expensive Swiss ones. At 21,600 BPH it’s not the smoothest sweep in the world, but at this price it’s the best allrounder.
The Draken Benguela is launching first on Kickstarter at a discount over the final retail price. Starting at $349 it seems a really good deal. Keep reading for Draken Benguela reviews, specs and photos.
