The History Behind Us
Foundation of the company
Hamtun was founded by a couple of friends back in 2015. Lead by co-founder and designer Ross Davis, the aim was to create the watches that we wanted to own but, as family men with normal jobs, couldn’t afford. By cutting out all of the extra layers of bureaucracy and by working to sensible margins, we set out to make high quality watches for people like us.
So why Hamtun?
Hamtun is one of the original names for the settlement that eventually became Southampton, our home city. Naming stuff is hard!
Hamtun was founded by Ross Davis. He came up with the original watch designs in 2015 and for the first couple of years of operation was responsible for every area of the business from product design through to shipping and general admin.
Ross lives with his wife and three children in Southampton, UK. Before starting Hamtun he spent 10 years in product and project management roles for software companies in London. With long term aspirations to run his own business, Hamtun started semi-accidently as a result of an interest in watches.
The H1, our first model
After 18 months of designing, prototyping and marketing, on 27 September 2016 Hamtun launched their first model, the H1 dive watch, on Kickstarter. With customers queueing up to buy it, the watch reached its target of £20,000 in 20 minutes and went on to raise around £220,000 in pre-orders in just 30 days.
Building a business
Following the huge success of the H1, we spent 2017 building an infrastructure to support company growth. With sales far exceeding expectations, the plans we’d made were no longer suitable. Building a new website and finding new shipping partners, new payment processors and new manufacturing partners, took most of 2017. It was time well spent, as it positioned the company for the big growth coming in 2018 and 2019.

Our second model
We launched the Neon, our second watch. This was the first time we’d included Swiss automatic movements in our watches, and the first time working with our new manufacturing partners. With 12 different colour combinations available at launch, it was by far our biggest and most ambitious project.

Our third model
We launched our third watch, the day-date Nanok. Designed to be a watch suitable for any scenario, it was our first model to include a scratch resistant treatment that ensured that the watch picked up far fewer of the hairline scratches and marks that contribute towards the “worn” look of most watches after a few months of use.
A new home
After years of working from dining room tables while annoying family members, Hamtun finally moved in to dedicated office space in Southampton city centre. As well as saving marriages, it also set Hamtun up for its next stage of growth as we focussed on becoming one of the best known microbrands in the world.

The return of a classic
We launched the long awaited follow up to 2016’s H1. Known as the Kraken (aka the H2), it took everything that people loved about the H1 and improved it further still. With more than £200,000 in sales on day one, and with nearly £500,000 (over $550,000) in 28 days, the Kraken was our biggest success yet.

I received my Hamtun yesterday and let me tell you - there’s only one word to describe the watch: SPECTACULAR! I can say with 100% confidence that is not the last Hamtun watch I will purchase.
Often when I see a product touted as “really good value” I confess I subconsciously assume it’s a marketing ploy to disguise compromises in quality. My Hamtun is the perfect example of how flawed that thinking is.
Definitely more bang for buck that anything I’ve encountered so far. I’ve loved titanium watches since the early80’s but this beats them all with its hands tied behind its back. Grab one while they are available, the price/performance ratio is out of this world.
